In memory of Lucien

Questions for Lucien

My friend, mentor, and brother.

I was always asking Lucien questions. And I still am.

The first image is a message he sent me. He took the screenshot on his own device and shared it on Studio, captioned “art rant.”

The three that follow are messages I drafted to myself and screenshotted like I was sending them to him. I had some new questions.

Lucien’s blue text messages to me about patience, truth, and continuing to make art: ‘great artists keep failing and keep trying.’

Hey Lucien I have a question. I’m opening up my eyes as I wake up and I feel something. Is this what gets you up out of bed every morning? I hope it’s the same thing. Because when you wake up, that day belongs to you. And I want to own my days just like you. Every day counts, and you didn’t just try to get the big numbers. You made every day feel special, and now all the days thank you for it. I look forward to asking you another question, and I want to show you this

Hey Lucien Did you find those truths? Can you send me a hint? Show me what you found? Another painting another relic I’ll search the footprints and footnotes An eggshell under a magnifying glass Water touching nylon Something of the something I know it’s in there somewhere Give me a sign, paint me a picture One last time

Hey Lucien Let’s prove them wrong and us right I wanted us so bad to fight the same fight I always told myself we were But I think you were fighting battles I’d never imagine And that you’d never want me to see But you gave me the tools And the friends I need So that I don’t have to fight them alone So that they don’t have to Let’s move them

There will always be a bit of Lucien, light, in all the art that I make.

Rest in peace Big Brother.
I’ll keep asking you questions.
